A well – maintained lawn is a sight to behold, and a mower is your key tool for achieving that. Here are some essential operating tips for your mower.

Pre – operation Checks

Before you start mowing, it’s crucial to perform some checks. First, examine the blades. Dull blades can tear the grass instead of cutting it cleanly, leading to a ragged appearance and potential lawn diseases. If the blades are dull, sharpen or replace them. Next, check the oil and fuel levels. For gas – powered mowers, make sure you use the correct type of fuel. Also, inspect the air filter. A clogged air filter can reduce engine performance.

Mowing Patterns

Changing your mowing pattern regularly is beneficial for your lawn. Mowing in the same direction every time can cause the grass to lean in one direction and may lead to uneven growth. You can alternate between mowing horizontally, vertically, and diagonally. This not only promotes upright growth but also gives your lawn a more professional look.

Cutting Height

Set the appropriate cutting height for your grass type. Different grass species have different ideal heights. Generally, it’s better not to cut more than one – third of the grass blade length at a time. Cutting too short can stress the grass, make it more vulnerable to heat and drought, and expose the soil to weed growth.

Safety First

Always wear appropriate safety gear, such as safety glasses and sturdy shoes. Remove any debris like stones, toys, or branches from the lawn before mowing to prevent them from being thrown by the mower. Never mow in wet conditions as it can be slippery and may damage the lawn. Also, keep children and pets away from the mowing area.

Post – operation Maintenance

After mowing, clean the mower. Remove any grass clippings from the deck and blades. This helps prevent rust and keeps the mower in good working condition. If you’re not going to use the mower for a while, store it in a dry place and consider draining the fuel for gas – powered mowers.
