Pre – operation Checks
Before starting the lawn mower, it’s important to conduct a series of checks. First, inspect the blades. Make sure they are sharp and not damaged. Dull or damaged blades can tear the grass instead of cutting it cleanly, which is bad for the lawn’s health. Second, check the fuel level. For gasoline – powered mowers, ensure there is enough fuel. For electric mowers, check the power cord or battery charge. Third, look for any debris around the mower and in the cutting area. Remove stones, sticks, and other objects that could be thrown by the mower and cause injury.
Starting the Mower
When starting a gasoline – powered lawn mower, follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. Usually, you need to set the choke, prime the engine if necessary, and then pull the starter cord. For electric mowers, simply plug it in or turn on the power switch. Stand in a stable position and keep your feet clear of the cutting deck when starting the mower.
Mowing Techniques
While mowing, walk at a steady pace. Don’t rush, as this can lead to uneven cutting. Overlap each pass slightly to ensure all the grass is cut evenly. Change the mowing direction regularly. Mowing in the same direction every time can cause the grass to lean in one direction and make the lawn look uneven. Also, adjust the cutting height according to the grass type and the season. In general, it’s better not to cut more than one – third of the grass blade length at a time.
Post – operation Maintenance
After mowing, turn off the mower and let it cool down if it’s a gasoline – powered one. Then, clean the mower. Remove grass clippings from the cutting deck, blades, and undercarriage. This helps prevent rust and keeps the mower in good working condition. Finally, store the mower properly. Keep it in a dry and secure place, away from children and pets.
