Pre – operation Checks
Before starting your lawn mower, conduct a thorough pre – operation check. First, check the oil level. Low oil can cause engine damage. You can easily access the oil dipstick, usually located near the engine, and ensure the oil is at the appropriate level. Second, examine the fuel. Make sure there is enough gasoline in the tank, and the fuel is clean. Contaminated fuel can lead to poor performance. Third, check the blades. Dull or damaged blades won’t cut the grass evenly. You can use a blade sharpener or replace the blades if necessary.
Proper Starting Procedure
To start a lawn mower correctly, follow these steps. For a manual – start mower, prime the engine by pressing the primer bulb a few times. Then, set the choke to the appropriate position (usually ‘closed’ for a cold start). Pull the starter cord firmly and steadily. Once the engine starts, gradually open the choke. For an electric – start mower, simply turn the key or press the start button after ensuring all pre – operation checks are done.
Mowing Techniques
When mowing your lawn, it’s important to use the right techniques. First, choose the correct cutting height. Different grass types and seasons require different cutting heights. Generally, it’s better not to cut more than one – third of the grass blade at a time. Second, mow in a pattern. You can mow in straight lines, alternating directions each time you mow. This helps prevent soil compaction and gives your lawn a more even appearance. Third, avoid mowing wet grass. Wet grass can clog the mower and may cause uneven cutting.
Post – operation Maintenance
After mowing, perform post – operation maintenance. Let the engine cool down completely. Then, clean the mower deck to remove grass clippings and debris. This prevents rust and keeps the mower in good working condition. Also, empty the grass catcher if you have one. Finally, store the lawn mower in a dry and safe place, away from children and pets.
