Pre – operation Checks

Before starting your lawn mower, conduct a thorough inspection. Check the oil level. Low oil can cause engine damage. If necessary, add the recommended oil type according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Also, examine the fuel tank. Ensure there is enough fuel, and the fuel is clean without any contaminants.

Inspect the cutting blade. A dull or damaged blade won’t cut the grass effectively and may even damage the lawn. If the blade is dull, sharpen it or replace it as needed. Additionally, check the mower’s wheels and tires for proper inflation and any signs of wear.

Starting the Lawn Mower

When starting a lawn mower, follow the correct procedure. For electric mowers, plug them in securely. For gas – powered mowers, set the choke correctly. If the engine is cold, set the choke to the closed position. After a few pulls of the starter cord, gradually open the choke as the engine warms up.

Pull the starter cord smoothly and steadily. Don’t yank it forcefully, as this can damage the starter mechanism. Once the engine starts, let it run for a short time to warm up before you begin mowing.

Mowing Techniques

When mowing, walk at a steady pace. Don’t rush, as this can lead to uneven cuts. Vary your mowing pattern each time you mow the lawn. This helps prevent the grass from leaning in one direction and promotes a healthier lawn.

Adjust the cutting height according to the grass type and the season. In the spring, you can set the mower to a higher cutting height to encourage strong root growth. In the summer, a slightly lower height can be used, but don’t cut the grass too short as it can stress the grass and make it more vulnerable to pests and diseases.

Post – operation Maintenance

After you finish mowing, turn off the lawn mower properly. For gas – powered mowers, let the engine cool down before you store it. Remove any grass clippings from the mower deck and the blade. This helps prevent rust and keeps the mower in good working condition.

Store the mower in a dry and secure place. If you won’t be using the mower for an extended period, drain the fuel tank to prevent fuel from going stale and causing engine problems.
