Pre – operation Checks

Before starting your lawn mower, check the oil level. Use the dipstick to ensure it’s at the appropriate level. A low oil level can cause engine damage. Also, check the fuel. Make sure you use the correct type of fuel as specified in the user manual. Inspect the blades. Dull blades can tear the grass instead of cutting it cleanly. If the blades are dull, sharpen or replace them.

Starting the Mower

For a push – type lawn mower, place it on a flat surface. Set the throttle to the appropriate position as per the instructions. Pull the starter cord firmly and smoothly. For a self – propelled or riding lawn mower, turn the ignition key after making sure all safety switches are engaged.

Mowing Techniques

Adjust the cutting height according to the type of grass and the season. In spring, you may want to set it a bit higher to protect the new growth. Mow in a pattern. You can mow in straight lines or in a criss – cross pattern for a more even cut. Overlap each pass slightly to avoid leaving uncut strips of grass.

Post – operation Maintenance

After mowing, turn off the mower and let it cool down. Clean the underside of the mower deck to prevent grass buildup, which can affect the performance. Empty the grass catcher regularly to avoid blockages. Store the mower in a dry place to prevent rust and damage.
