Pre – operation Checks
Before starting your lawn mower, it’s crucial to perform some pre – operation checks. First, check the fuel level. A low fuel level can cause the mower to stop in the middle of your lawn. You can also check the oil level in four – stroke engines. Low oil can lead to engine damage. Additionally, inspect the blades for sharpness and any signs of damage. Dull or damaged blades can result in an uneven cut.
Starting the Lawn Mower
To start a lawn mower, follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. For most models, you need to set the choke correctly. If it’s cold, you may need to set the choke to the ‘closed’ position. Once the engine starts, gradually open the choke. Pull the starter cord firmly and steadily. Avoid yanking it, as this can damage the starter mechanism.
Mowing Techniques
When mowing, it’s advisable to mow in straight lines. This gives your lawn a neat and professional look. Overlap each pass slightly to ensure no grass is left uncut. Don’t cut the grass too short at once. A good rule of thumb is to never remove more than one – third of the grass blade length. Cutting too short can stress the grass and make it more susceptible to diseases.
Post – operation Maintenance
After you finish mowing, let the engine cool down. Then, clean the mower deck to remove grass clippings and debris. This helps prevent rust and keeps the mower in good working condition. You should also empty the fuel tank if you’re not going to use the mower for an extended period. Regularly change the air filter and spark plug according to the manufacturer’s schedule. This will ensure the mower runs smoothly and efficiently.
Safety Precautions
Always wear appropriate safety gear, such as safety glasses and ear protection. Keep children and pets away from the mowing area. Be aware of your surroundings and watch out for rocks, toys, or other objects that could be thrown by the blades. Before performing any maintenance, make sure the engine is off and the spark plug is disconnected.
