Introduction

Lawn mowers are essential tools for maintaining a beautiful and well – groomed lawn. However, operating them properly is crucial for both the machine’s longevity and your safety. Here are some valuable operating tips for lawn mowers.

Pre – operation Checks

Inspect the Lawn Mower

Before starting the lawn mower, carefully examine it for any visible damage. Check the blades for dullness or chips. A sharp blade ensures a clean cut and reduces stress on the grass. Also, inspect the wheels, handles, and engine components for any signs of wear or looseness.

Fuel and Oil Levels

Make sure there is enough fuel in the tank. For gas – powered mowers, use the recommended fuel type. Additionally, check the oil level. Low oil can cause engine damage, so top it up if necessary according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

During Operation

Mowing Pattern

Adopt a consistent mowing pattern. Alternate the direction of mowing each time you cut the grass. This helps prevent the grass from leaning in one direction and promotes even growth. For example, you can mow horizontally one week and vertically the next.

Cutting Height

Adjust the cutting height of the lawn mower according to the type of grass and the season. In general, don’t cut more than one – third of the grass blade length at a time. During hot and dry seasons, set a higher cutting height to help the grass retain moisture.

Post – operation Maintenance

Clean the Lawn Mower

After mowing, turn off the mower and let it cool down. Then, clean the underside of the deck to remove grass clippings, dirt, and debris. This prevents rust and keeps the mower running smoothly.

Store Properly

Store the lawn mower in a dry and protected place. If it’s a gas – powered mower, you may want to drain the fuel tank during long – term storage to prevent fuel degradation.
